|Hello again everyone, |
I've been staying in the Peneda Mountains recently at some friends' house. I love this part of Portugal. The hills are grey, green and gold most of the year with granite, pine, gorse and broom. Sometimes the mist swirls and makes them mysterious; at other times, on clear days, the views are breath-taking, stretching even to the sea at Viana do Castelo 40 km away.
My friends told me about a settlement high up on the far side of the mountains where there was one sole inhabitant called Fernando. You must admit that this is curious; I at least was intrigued and I have followed it up. As it happens the story turns out to be yet more bizarre given how this man makes his living, what the place he lives in is like, and whom he has found to come up daily to give him hand.
I do hope you will enjoy this unusual story and, if you are ever in the area, you might like to give Fernando some support. I myself am thinking of doing so by taking some visitors from overseas to meet him and see his 'village' in the late summer. Why not read the story and make up your own minds?
Lonesome Fernando on top of the world
If ever you come across curious facts that you'd like me to look into and write about, please don't hesitate. As I said, this post comes to you thanks to a friend's word in my ear.
And, as ever, if you can write a short comment on Expats' Blog for me, I'd be grateful.
Best wishes to you all
