Hello everyone,

Here is a seasonal update on life in Portugal.

The weather systems which have been plaguing the UK have clipped the Iberian Peninsula too and we have experienced them. All the same, we braved the storms this January to travel the length of the country, from Ponte de Lima in the north to the Algarve in the south and back again. The first of my posts on January in Portugal is out now. I hope you will enjoy it.

There is also a brief reflection on the death of the footballer Eusebio, a man much loved by fans around the world and whose name was used in a joke in the 1960s to show which well-known Portuguese man was the more respected: the president or the footballer

Coming up soon there will be posts on:

  • the Count who plans to improve your health with a spa and maize bread whose production he will be able to trace from his own plants to the table
  • the most astonishing painted wall papers in a house which has been in the same family for over 600 years
  • the fascinating and individual Pousadas and one way of paying for them
  • the most extraordinary and ornate hotel in a place where Napoleon's army experienced one of its worst setbacks
  • another reason why Ponte de Lima is a great choice for our new home
  • posh isn't always best: the delightful central guest house and cafe in Ponte de Lima
  • and... and ...and... well just wait and see.

I hope you enjoy January in the Serra da Estrela – and a warm welcome at the Pousada de Manteigas even if you think you might prefer July for your visit.

Best wishes to you all.
