|Hello all, |
This time I have something rather different for you.
Last year my middle son and his partner visited us and then took a side trip to the Azores. They were both charmed by the island of São Miguel and insisted we should visit. There were inexpensive flights from Porto, they told us, so we had no excuse not to go. This May we have taken their advice and I have two stories for you.
The first is about one of the curious and beautiful geological features: the crater of a dormant volcano and the lagoons inside it.
The Azores: they're way out, man!
The second is a suggestion as to where to stay. We like old places with character even though they may not have all the facilities of a posh new hotel.
The Convent of So Francisco: austere echoes of the past in modern comfort
I hope you will enjoy these posts and that, if you are able, you might consider visiting the Azores. If you are a sun seeker, there are beaches but that is not what I would go there for. If you have strong calves and thighs, hiking would be wonderful and there are a lot of walkers there.
I'd love to go back and visit some of the other eight islands too. Perhaps you have visited them. If so, do write in and tell everyone.
Very best wishes to all,
