Hello everyone,

I trust you are all well this winter. There has been snow in York but not very much. However, our family in New York is considering hibernation as a solution to suffering from the seriously inclement weather there.

In the Minho, the weather is temperamental, just as it is in the UK, but at least there are distinct seasons, which I find a joy after living for many years in the tropics, where the only real difference was between wet and dry. Ponte de Lima has had a great deal of rain and our baby lawn keeps getting washed away before taking root but we are hopeful that in the coming spring it will really get going.

Last autumn, however, at the end of a brutal summer, we were charmed by the lovely crocuses that spring up on the hillsides. They seem almost too delicate to withstand a blazing sun yet they return every year. I've published a couple of pictures for you to see.

I also seem to have become obsessed with the loos in Portuguese airports. Not long ago I wrote about how to keep your baby quiet while using a cubicle. This time it is the advertising on the door that caught my eye. It seems that Portugal is a world leader in one particular product. I keep on wondering what consequences to the landscape this has as our old enemy, the eucalyptus, is almost certainly involved but I don't have enough information to speculate too closely on that.

Finally, I want to take you up into the Peneda Geres National Park again but this time to the south of the River Lima. Portugal's only national park – it has a number of other parks it calls 'natural' parks – deserves to be better known. The landscapes are stunning. Portugal really is the country for panoramas. I hope you will enjoy a brief visit on the screen.

And now, to you all, I'm sending my very best wishes for a happy, productive and successful 2018.

Best wishes
